Reflecting on the Real-World Use of Biologic Therapy in Asthma Management

Program Description
Asthma poses significant challenges for patients due to frequent exacerbations and the limitations of traditional therapies, including the long-term effects of corticosteroids. For those with moderate to severe asthma, these challenges can be particularly burdensome. Biologic treatments offer an additional option for patients by targeting the underlying inflammatory processes, such as eosinophilic type 2 inflammation mediated by cytokines including IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, which contribute to asthma progression in many cases. By inhibiting these pathways, biologics have shown potential to reduce exacerbations, improve lung function, and enhance quality of life in both children and adults. However, the integration of these therapies into care is not without challenges, particularly concerning cost, access, and the need for precise patient selection based on phenotypes and clinical characteristics. Pharmacists play a critical role in navigating these complexities, from understanding the clinical and economic implications of biologics to balancing treatment efficacy with resource allocation. This session will provide an overview of the role of type 2 inflammation, real-world clinical data on biologics, and strategies to optimize adherence and access in asthma care and management.
