Reducing Endocrinopathies of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy: Management Strategies for Oncology Pharmacists

Program Description

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been associated with unique adverse event profiles, the most notable affecting the endocrine system. ICI-associated endocrinopathies can consist of thyroid, pituitary, adrenal gland, and pancreas dysfunction. The effective management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) depends on early recognition and intervention that is appropriate for the type and grade of irAE. The general management of immune-mediated endocrinopathies differs greatly from the management of other irAEs. Because ICI-mediated endocrine toxicities result in permanent organ damage, management consists of lifelong hormone replacement therapy with continued symptom and laboratory monitoring. Pharmacists are positioned to educate patients in symptom recognition of endocrinopathies to help facilitate rapid diagnosis and appropriate management while allowing for the continuation of ICI therapy. This activity provides an in-depth review of immune-mediated endocrinopathies associated with the use of ICIs and management strategies for oncology pharmacists.
