Add-on activity
This activity includes a patient perspective.
Program Description
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a burdensome inherited disease in which a thick mucus forms over the respiratory, reproductive, and digestive systems. Common among the Caucasian population, CF occurs in 1 of every 2000 to 4000 live births, totaling over 30,000 patients in the United States, and costs nearly $131,000 per patient. With no current cure for CF, multifaceted symptomatic treatments and prophylactic regimens have improved survival and tolerability of the disease. CFTR modulators is one medication class that addresses the basic deficit in CF and includes potentiators, which open the CFTR channel function, and correctors, which assist in the transport of CFTR to the cell surface. Pharmacists are essential in helping patients navigate through the complex treatment regimens with capabilities of monitoring drug-drug interactions, ensuring appropriate dosing, and providing patient education. This activity will provide pharmacists with critical knowledge of CF and its treatment challenges, emerging therapies, as well as strategies to improve the outcomes of patients. Integrated within the program is a patient perspective interview that highlights the experience of a patient living with CF and how the patient navigated diagnosis and treatment.
