Program Description
The detection, stratification, and management of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has experienced significant progress, leading to updated evidence-based recommendations and revised definitions based on greater knowledge of pathophysiologic and diagnostic mechanisms of PAH. Despite better understanding of PAH pathophysiology, guidelines, and pharmacologic options, challenges in PAH management include early diagnosis, early initiation of treatment, and underutilization of guidelines. Additionally, questions about the optimization of monotherapy, add-on, and combination therapy remain, as they are dictated by prior hemodynamic criteria and functional status. Pharmacists play a crucial role in reducing the burden of disease for patients with PAH, and they must be familiar with disease severity and efficacy and safety data for established and emerging treatments to prevent PAH disease progression, improve symptoms, and optimize patient outcomes. This session will examine the current and emerging treatment landscape of PAH and how management approaches can help specialty pharmacists provide patient-specific counseling, navigate therapy recommendations, and improve treatment access for patients with PAH. To illustrate real-world application of these concepts and updated guidelines in treatment decision-making, patient case video vignettes will be presented to facilitate interactive learning and enhance understanding of patient-specific needs and treatment decisions in PAH management.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) pathophysiology to uncover the impact of PAH on patients' quality of life
  • Employ recommendations from current guidelines for the management of PAH in the development of treatment plans for patients with PAH, including those with cardiovascular comorbidities
  • Identify opportunities for specialty pharmacists to reduce treatment gaps for patients with PAH, including treatment initiation, dose optimization strategies, and monitoring response to treatment
