Program Description
Biosimilars are taking a rapidly growing role in the treatment of disease as an alternative to biologics, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Biosimilars are comparable to their reference compound and are deemed as having no clinically meaningful variations. Benefits to their use include increased availability and decreased cost for patients, but use of biosimilars in IBD treatment is limited due to a lack of awareness and acceptance among prescribers and patients. Pharmacists are in a unique position to aid in the adoption of biosimilars as IBD therapy and should be involved with identifying opportunities for effective selection and use of available biosimilars in treatment and management of IBD. This activity will educate pharmacists on different biosimilar efficacy in IBD, their monitoring parameters, and how to manage potential adverse effects. This activity includes an interactive simulation case that will guide pharmacists through encounters with both patients and other health care professionals about biosimilars to prepare them to inform and advocate for the use of biosimilars in clinical practice.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Explore the history and growing role of biosimilars as well as the clinical and economic impact of their role in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Examine immunogenicity, extrapolation of indications, interchangeability, and switching of biosimilars in clinical practice for IBD management
- Analyze data regarding the safety and efficacy of biosimilars in the management of IBD and mechanism of action of biologic anti-TNF agents
- Determine the pharmacist’s role in the management of patients with IBD and strategies to incorporate the use of biosimilars into clinical practice
