Progress in the Treatment of Recurrent or Metastatic Cervical Cancer: Priming Pharmacists to Optimize Patient Care

Program Description

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the primary risk factor for cervical cancer. The majority of cervical cancer cases are preventable by routine screening, but despite these available methods, inadequate protocols persist and testing is not performed in approximately one-third of women. In patients with recurrent, progressive, or metastatic cervical cancer, there are currently no curative treatment strategies. However, novel therapies currently under investigation may increase options for this patient population. Pharmacists require knowledge about emerging treatment options and how they may fit in guideline recommendations. As options for targeted therapies expand, pharmacists practicing in oncology settings will need to recognize potential therapy-related immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) and engage the oncology care team in strategies to reduce irAE incidence with effective management strategies. This activity will highlight the key role of the pharmacist on the multidisciplinary team in the evolving landscape of cervical cancer treatment and will prepare them to provide information on screening and preventive methods, therapy recommendations, and counseling to improve patient care.
