Preventing Peptic Ulcer Complications: A Primer for Pharmacy Technicians

Program Description

Peptic ulcer disease can occur from overuse of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or high-risk medications, and pharmacy technicians can assist the pharmacist in identifying patients who are at risk. One complication related to ulcers is life-threatening bleeding, so knowing which patient symptoms require referral to the pharmacist or other health care provider is an important role for pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy technicians can also address myths and misconceptions patients may have about preventing and treating ulcers. This activity will familiarize pharmacy technicians with first-line prescription therapy and over-the-counter options for prevention and treatment of ulcers.
