Program Description
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) can be classified into 5 groups that differ in clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and hemodynamic characteristics, all of which affect treatment strategy. Because PAH is a rare disease, many clinicians may not be familiar with its symptoms, and patients with PAH frequently experience diagnostic delays, with some experiencing symptoms for more than 2 years before receiving a diagnosis. To appropriately slow disease progression and improve the prognosis of patients with PAH, it is imperative that pharmacists and clinicians follow guideline recommendations and evidence supporting use of agents. Multiple classes of drugs are approved for use in PAH as monotherapy or combination regimens, with additional potential disease-modifying agents in development. Some treatment centers have integrated pharmacy services into their clinics to facilitate communication between patients and clinicians, expanding the pharmacist’s involvement in the treatment and management of patients with PAH. With these expanding roles, pharmacists will have to become familiar with existing and emerging therapy options, drug-related adverse effects, and access and adherence issues patients face. This activity incorporates videos that will allow pharmacists to apply counseling strategies to real-world patient encounters by following a patient from treatment initiation to medication follow-up while highlighting the importance of adherence.
