Pharmacist-Guided Management of Bipolar Disorder: Addressing Challenges and Optimizing Patient Outcomes With Innovative Therapies

Program Description

The management of bipolar disorder is complex and involves several treatment modalities. Pharmacists are integral members of the health care team and can contribute individualizing care and treatment strategies for patients with bipolar disorder, primarily by promoting the use of effective and safe medications. Several promising medications are in development for the treatment of bipolar disorder and depression, and with the growing number of treatment options for patients with bipolar disorder, decision-making is more complex and requires pharmacist insight. This program will examine early identification of risk factors and symptoms of bipolar disorder and the role of pharmacist-provided counseling in improving patients’ attitudes toward medication, medication adherence, reduced medication burden, and decreased rates of hospitalization to improve patient’s quality of life. Clinical evidence for the use of new and emerging treatments and updated treatment guidelines for the management of bipolar disorder will be presented.
