Program Description
Life-threatening complications of sickle cell disease (SCD) can result in repeat hospitalizations, missed school or workdays, and generally poor quality of life for patients. SCD is a multisystem disorder, and the variations of SCD manifest in different degrees of severity requiring different types of treatments. The 2 hallmark symptoms of SCD are hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusion. These symptoms can be painful, and each contributes to increased health care resource utilization. Consequently, both adults and pediatric patients living with SCD may require pain management therapy as well as need for acute treatment options with therapies targeted to treat SCD and vaso-occlusive crises. This webinar will review emerging treatments for SCD including innovative approaches with the potential for long-term disease control for patients with SCD. Strategies for managed care professionals to ensure continuity of care as patients with SCD transition from adolescence to adulthood will be presented along with guideline-recommended standards of care in SCD treatment.
