This activity was originally broadcast live at AJMC® Day of Education Spring 2023.

Program Description

The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has transformed the treatment paradigm for patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and has led to the investigation of these therapies in early-stage disease as well. Managed care professionals must be aware of emerging data and guideline updates to ensure optimal combination and sequencing of these agents for early-stage NSCLC as well as management of toxicities. This activity will review safety and efficacy data of ICIs as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and consolidation therapy in early-stage NSCLC as monotherapy, in combination with other ICIs or chemotherapy, and in combination with radiation therapy. The rising economic burden of cancer care cost is an increasingly important consideration for managed care pharmacists alongside clinical benefit and toxicity. Managed care professionals will gain insight into their roles in providing value-based and patient-centered care delivery models to improve patient care, increase access, and reduce or manage costs associated with ICI therapy in early-stage NSCLC.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the evidence for using FDA-approved immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and/or consolidation therapy in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • Apply guideline recommendations and clinical data to determine the most up-to-date, value-based treatments for patients with nonmetastatic NSCLC.
  • Explore strategies to maximize the value of ICIs in the treatment sequence of early-stage NSCLC according to agent effectiveness, impact on recurrence, and cost of care.
