Patient Safety and Reporting Errors: A Guide for Pharmacists and Technicians

Program Description

Medication safety is an important responsibility for health care providers. Each year, more than 1.5 million emergency visits occur in the US because of adverse drug events. There is a serious public health threat to patients suffering from allergic reactions, side effects, overmedication, and medication errors. Underreporting of these events, due to lack of awareness of the reporting platforms, or other reasons, can put patients at risk for similar events in the future. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can utilize reporting programs such as MedWatch and VAERS to help ensure public health and patient safety. This program will review the burden of adverse drug events (ADEs) and discuss federal monitoring programs in place to address ADEs. Processes to submit information to common reporting programs will be reviewed.
