Program Description

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a leading cause of severe vision loss in older adults, characterized by abnormal blood vessel growth beneath the macula, leading to exudative changes and retinal damage. Diabetic macular edema (DME), on the other hand, is an accumulation of fluid in the macula in patients with diabetes and results in vision impairment. Both conditions profoundly impact patient quality of life. The landscape for managing these conditions has evolved significantly with the development of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. However, treatment burden, including frequent intravitreal injections and monitoring visits, poses challenges to adherence. Specialty pharmacists have a significant opportunity to optimize treatment outcomes by carefully considering patient-specific factors, including disease severity, ocular comorbidities, and treatment response when assessing therapies. This session will review the latest efficacy, safety, and real-world data associated with anti-VEGF treatments as well as emerging therapies for nAMD and DME to ensure delivery of patient-centered care to improve clinical outcomes. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, specialty pharmacists can advocate for access to innovative therapies, streamline care pathways, and mitigate barriers to treatment for patients living with nAMD and DME.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Compare the incidence, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and risk factors associated with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) and impact on patient quality of life
  • Explain most recent efficacy, safety, and real-world data associated with treatments for nAMD
  • Analyze the safety and efficacy of current and emerging therapies for the treatment of DME
  • Identify patient-centered strategies for specialty pharmacists to improve care and decrease costs for patients with nAMD and DME to optimize adherence and clinical outcomes
