Program Description
Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson disease (PD) each year, with an economic burden of at least $14 billion that is expected to double by 2040. Several key challenges and unmet medical needs exist in the PD treatment landscape. Guidelines addressing treatment of PD with and without motor symptom involvement were last published in 2006 and 2010 by the American Academy of Neurology and have since been retired. As no disease-modifying therapies yet exist to address the underlying pathology of PD, decisions about when to initiate treatment are often debated and represent a major limitation for pharmacists and managed care professionals. Current treatment options are also associated with frequent adverse effects that may be dose-limiting for patients, further impairing tolerability and diminishing patient quality of life. Polypharmacy with adjunctive medications is often required and compounds direct medical costs. Managed care professionals and pharmacists should keep abreast of the status of ongoing research for therapeutic agents for PD with the potential to prevent complications that contribute to increased healthcare resource utilization and poor clinical outcomes. This activity will provide a review of the current treatment landscape of PD and an in-depth overview of emerging disease-modifying therapies under development.
