Program Description
In recent years, there have been numerous advances in therapies for Parkinson disease (PD), but guidelines for treatment are far behind. The progressive impairment in motor functioning and worsening symptoms restricting autonomic, sensory, and neuropsychiatric functions cause significant burdens on patients’ quality of life. Although dopaminergic agents are effective for management of motor symptoms associated with PD, they do not provide neuroprotective effects or alter progression of the disease. Such agents are also associated with frequent dose-limiting adverse effects that warrant the use of adjunctive medications and compound direct medical costs. This activity will review ongoing clinical trial data for agents targeting the α-synuclein pathology associated with PD as well as new formulations with the potential to minimize motor-related complications. In the absence of long-term evidence for neuroprotection, managed care pharmacists should be able to address patient expectations regarding appropriate drug therapy, proper medication use and dosage, and current limitations of the medications available for PD.

Target audience: Specialty and managed care pharmacists, managed care payers, pharmacy directors, pharmacy benefit managers, specialty pharmacy directors, and any other pharmacist and/or healthcare professional interested in the scientific advances of or involved in the care of patients with Parkinson disease.
