Program Description

Pharmacists may occasionally need to answer questions, fill prescriptions, or compound medicines for animals. When patients are companion animals, there are a number of additional factors pharmacists need to consider. This introduction to veterinary pharmacy will familiarize pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with veterinary prescribing practices and review veterinary drug information resources.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Outline veterinary drug information resources that can be used to support a pharmacist in the safe and accurate filling of pet prescriptions
• Review the applicable legal and regulatory constructs of drugs used in animals including FDA-approved uses and extra-label use
• Discuss factors influencing veterinary prescribing and dispensing
