Overcoming the Challenges of Treating and Managing Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis in Pediatric Patients

Program Description

It is estimated that 10% to 20% of children in the United States have atopic dermatitis (AD). Multiple factors including genetic and environmental exposures have been implicated in the development and exacerbations of AD. Pediatric patients and their caregivers can both experience diminished quality of life stemming from anxiety or embarrassment about AD exacerbations, and these feelings may influence treatment decisions or adherence to therapy. Pharmacists must recognize this burden of AD and be equipped to address treatment barriers as well as offer counseling and education to both patients and caregivers. While topical corticosteroids and oral immunosuppressants have been the predominant treatment options for pediatric patients with AD, recent clinical evidence for emerging agents and delivery systems have the potential to change the therapy landscape. Additional considerations for pharmacists involved in the treatment of pediatric patients with AD will be presented, including counseling pearls for caregivers regarding administration and dosing of currently available and emerging therapy options.

• Identify the pathogenesis, incidence, treatment challenges, and impact of moderate to severe pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) on patients’ health-related quality of life
• Examine guideline-directed pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for pediatric patients with moderate to severe AD
• Explain the efficacy and safety of new and emerging agents for the treatment of moderate to severe pediatric AD including mechanism of action, administration, dosing, and potential adverse effects
• Explore individualized treatment plans tailored to patient needs and patient/caregiver preference
