Program Description
Individuals with osteoporosis experience bone fragility and are more susceptible to fractures. Osteoporosis is more prevalent in women of older age due to transitions in hormone production that occur during menopause, and nearly 1.4 million fractures occur in women in the United States each year due to osteoporosis. While less common in men, osteoporosis does pose a significant public health burden in this population due to rising cases as life expectancy increases. Any type of fracture, particularly hip, vertebral, and wrist fractures, can incur substantial health care burden and significantly interfere with a patient’s quality of life and ability to perform activities of daily living. These factors are important for pharmacists to consider when communicating with patients who may be at increased risk or are diagnosed with osteoporosis. With an understanding of screening recommendations and both nonpharmacologic strategies as well as pharmacologic therapies for osteoporosis, pharmacists can be influential in osteoporosis management. This activity will provide specialty pharmacists with the most recent data related to osteoporosis prevention and treatment modalities and a review of the recently updated AACE guidelines. The counseling video vignettes included in this activity will detail approaches pharmacists can use to engage patients in discussion about prevention, treatment and management of this condition.
