Program Description
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a rare, chronic, progressive autoimmune liver disease. Advances in disease awareness, diagnostic assays for AMA detection, and routine liver function tests have improved the diagnosis of cholestasis. Current treatment options for PBC are not curative and have been associated with adverse effects including fatigue and pruritus that remain burdensome for patients. Itch due to PBC remains undertreated, with just 50% of patients receiving treatment. This session will explore recent clinical data for new and emerging therapies under investigation for the treatment of cholestatic pruritus, with an emphasis on the role of specialty pharmacists in diagnosis, treatment decision-making, and monitoring of adverse effects in patients with PBC. Specialty pharmacists will be able to apply patient-focused interventions, such as educating patients on proper treatment use and administration, identifying patients who may benefit from alternative treatments, and assisting patients with accessing approved treatment options in their roles with managing PBC and associated pruritus.
