Optimizing Treatment of Early-Stage Breast Cancer and the Pharmacist’s Role in Managing Targeted Therapies

Program Description

Treatment options for early-stage breast cancer have expanded to include several targeted therapies based on breast cancer subtype. Tumor subtype characterization is essential in target identification for optimizing therapeutic agent selection, informing treatment decisions, and determining treatment outcomes as well as the likelihood of patient response to therapy. This program will explore patient- and disease-specific characteristics, actionable mutations, and guideline recommendations to aid oncology pharmacists in the nuanced treatment landscape of early-stage breast cancer. Though targeted therapies have reshaped the field, they are also associated with new toxicity profiles leading to increased nonadherence or even premature therapy cessation. Pharmacists must be aware of factors that place patients at higher risk of treatment discontinuation and be equipped to provide additional supportive care and education. A patient perspective interview incorporated throughout the activity will shed light on the experiences of a patient with early-stage breast cancer and the role of pharmacists from diagnosis to treatment initiation and continued monitoring.
