Optimizing Treatment Approaches for Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure

Program Description

Iron deficiency (ID) is a common comorbidity for patients with heart failure (HF) and affects approximately 50% of patients. ID, regardless of anemia, has shown to increase mortality, hospitalization, and early readmission in patients with HF. Pharmacists should be knowledgeable about updated treatment guideline recommendations and clinical evidence as well as current and emerging therapy options to optimize outcomes in patients with ID and IDA. This program will review the efficacy, potential adverse effects, and dosing regimens of various parenteral iron formulations as well as challenges in management of iron deficiency and the role of the pharmacist in improving patient outcomes. An interview with an advanced HF practitioner will share clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with ID and HF as well as strategies pharmacists can use when working with the multidisciplinary team to optimize HF patient care.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Explain the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, risk factors, and clinical burden of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in patients with heart failure (HF)
• Explore clinical guidelines for the treatment of ID/IDA in patients with HF using available iron formulations and emerging treatment strategies
• Identify the role of the pharmacist in the transitions of care for patients with ID and anemia in HF to ensure appropriate use and monitoring of parenteral iron
