Program Description
Projections estimate that by 2035, approximately 45% of the US population will have some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Pharmacists should support patients in reducing risk factors for CVD, namely reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and making appropriate interventions. Statin therapy with or without ezetimibe has been widely used for lipid-lowering therapy, but patients often discontinue therapy due to issues such as poor adherence. Due to ongoing issues of statin intolerance or inability to achieve desired therapeutic effect with statins, expanding the use of therapies such as the PCSK9 inhibitors is warranted to improve clinical outcomes in patients with hyperlipidemia upon critical discussions with prescribers and patients. This session will highlight the most relevant and up-to-date information regarding developments in the therapeutic landscape for LDL-C lowering, particularly the rapidly evolving data surrounding use of PCSK9 inhibitors, with the use of patient case video vignettes.

• Examine major adverse cardiovascular events and complications associated with hypercholesterolemia, as well as the treatment guidelines based on the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology
• Explore safety and efficacy data as well as mechanism of action and dosing considerations for PCSK9 inhibitors in the management of hypercholesterolemia
• Demonstrate patient counseling techniques pharmacists can use in identifying appropriate candidates for PCSK9 inhibitors and providing patient education for the treatment of hyperlipidemia to optimize outcomes
