Optimizing Contact Lens Solution Selection and Use: Key Considerations for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in Practice (Pharmacist Credit)

Program Description

The selection of contact lens care systems and solutions should be individualized for each patient and specific to the type of lens used. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be familiar with the key differences between multipurpose solutions and hydrogen peroxide-based systems, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. When used appropriately, both solution types are effective, and all available products are U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved, but the number of potential systems and solutions available in the pharmacy can be overwhelming for patients. Pharmacists can provide patient counseling and education related to contact lens use and care, review with patients that over-the-counter lens care products are easily accessible, and educate them about the differences in available solutions, including their ingredients, use, and adverse effects. This activity will explore key differences between multipurpose and hydrogen peroxide-based solutions, including the disinfectants used, instructions for use, and the most common risks associated with use, to promote effective and safe use of these solutions to improve patient comfort and ocular outcomes.
