Program Description
The landscape of HIV treatment has evolved significantly over the past several decades, allowing for individualized care and improved outcomes. Initiating therapy immediately has become the cornerstone recommendation to reduce transmission of disease and prevent morbidity and mortality. Selection of initial antiretroviral therapy (ART) requires shared decision making between the patient and provider, taking into account patient preferences, pill burden, costs, and potential adverse effects. Recent data have suggested a correlation between ART and weight gain in people living with HIV (PLWH). Weight gain has the potential to increase the risk of comorbidities, which are already more common in PLWH. This activity will provide an overview of the current state of HIV management, including impact of COVID-19 and disparities in care, with a review of guideline recommendations and considerations when initiating ART.
