Program Description
Cytogenetic risk classification based on routine blood tests forms the basis of the standard treatment paradigm in lower-risk MDS (LR-MDS) and requires the involvement of oncology pharmacists to individualize treatment management. Treatment goals center on symptom improvement and achieving transfusion independence, yet patients with MDS frequently experience complications, including anemia with transfusion dependence, transfusional iron overload requiring iron chelation therapy, and disease progression/leukemic transformation, among others. Several recently approved and emerging agents could overcome and mitigate these challenges as alternatives to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and red blood cell transfusions. Clinical pharmacists within oncology practice settings play key roles in implementing novel therapies into treatment paradigms as they contribute to updates of treatment and education protocols, provide patient counseling, and assist with supportive care for newly approved therapies. This educational activity will center around recent and relevant data to provide oncology pharmacists with up-to-date information and insights into newly emerging therapies and treatment protocols in LR-MDS. Included patient case discussions will establish the role of oncology pharmacists in symptom improvement, enhancing quality of life, and prolonging survival for patients with LR-MDS.

- Construct personalized treatment plans for patients with LR-MDS considering patient preference and disease-related complications
- Optimize systemic therapy for patients with LR-MDS through appropriate dosing and therapeutic adjustments relative to treatment response and tolerability
- Practice with interdisciplinary health care teams to ensure the seamless integration of supportive care interventions into the overall LR-MDS patient care plan
