Program Description
In generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), patients experience muscle weakness and difficulty controlling voluntary muscle movements across multiple systems due to disruptions in the communication between the nerve and the muscle at the neuromuscular junction. The treatment of gMG is highly individualized based on patient presentation and response, and specialty pharmacists must be familiar with recently approved and investigational medications to modify the disease progression and quickly resolve exacerbations. Patients with gMG are initially treated with a cholinesterase inhibitor and immunosuppressive therapies, such as prednisone, as maintenance therapy. This program will explore emerging agents in the treatment of gMG and present clinical data highlighting the safety and efficacy of recently approved and investigational therapies. Specialty pharmacists are central in the management of rare diseases. Their roles in the multidisciplinary care of patients with gMG to improve clinical recommendations and assist patients in navigating the health care system will be discussed.
