Program Description
Despite the availability of treatments, diabetes continues to be the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Characterized by high blood sugar levels, diabetes is a public health threat due to its increased risk for both microvascular and macrovascular complications. The first line of treatment typically includes lifestyle modifications combined with oral medications, such as metformin, but many patients struggle to achieve optimal blood sugar control. Diabetes is a progressive disease that often requires insulin replacement therapy to effectively manage hyperglycemia. Pharmacists play a crucial role in identifying patients who may not be adequately managed on oral therapy or could benefit from insulin therapies. This activity will explore the role of insulin replacement therapy in managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, review different insulin therapies, and the importance of patient education.
