Program Description
Evidence has shown that HER2-targeted therapies have improved outcomes for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Patients with early-stage disease are at greater risk of disease recurrence and often identify risk of recurrence and financial burden of treatment as significant concerns. While some patients with early-stage breast cancer do not need adjuvant therapy, the treatment options have expanded, and managed care pharmacists are a critical part of appropriate treatment selection. Research is ongoing to identify the potential role and best practices for utilization of HER2-targeted therapies in early-stage breast cancer. Managed care pharmacists must be informed about emerging treatment options to develop policies that facilitate access to safe and effective treatments to improve long-term outcomes for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. This article will recap existing guideline recommendations for HER2-positive early-stage breast cancer as well as prepare managed care pharmacists to incorporate these new therapeutic approaches into patient management plans.
