Program Description
Myelofibrosis (MF) is a rare chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by clonal proliferation of myeloid cells, bone marrow fibrosis, cytopenias, hepatosplenomegaly, extramedullary hematopoiesis, pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and systemic symptoms. The introduction and approval of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors to MF treatment, particularly ruxolitinib, has become a cornerstone in the management of MF. Despite the advances, approximately half of patients treated with JAK inhibitor therapy fail to achieve desired treatment goals, eliciting a need for additional therapeutic strategies. The rapid expansion in the treatment landscape has rendered the appropriate selection and initiation of subsequent therapies as well as the management of symptoms and adverse effects of treatment as major challenges. Thus, differentiating and managing these adverse effects is critical to avoid discontinuation and achieve desired treatment outcomes. Pharmacists involved in the care of patients with MF must ensure diligent monitoring, treatment modifications, and interventions as disease- or treatment-induced complications may occur. This activity will equip pharmacists with the latest treatment strategies and invaluable clinical insights, ensuring optimal treatment choices and elevating patient care in MF.
