Navigating Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Therapy and Cardiovascular Comorbidities: Clinical Recommendations and Safety Measures

Program Description
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) primarily affects adults older than 70 years, and these patients may present with additional comorbidities, leading to challenges in therapeutic management. While targeted therapies, including Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors, are recommended first line, cardiovascular toxicities have been identified as significant complications of treatment with these agents. A growing body of evidence suggests that combining targeted therapies may improve disease response while minimizing resistance and toxicities. As new protocols and therapeutic agents expand the treatment landscape in CLL, oncology pharmacists must recognize the risk of cardiotoxicity when considering an appropriate agent for patients with CLL. This program will examine various mechanisms by which BTK inhibitors and other small-molecule inhibitors in CLL treatment cause cardiac toxicity and their impact on the cardiovascular system. The discussion will compare safety and efficacy data for BTK inhibitors to best guide the selection of preferred regimens and anticipate and mitigate cardiovascular adverse effects.
