Moving Beyond Medications: Practices to Provide Appropriate Care for People Living With HIV

Program Description

Over 1.1 million people in the United States over 13 years of age had been diagnosed with HIV as of 2019. Of this population, many groups have been disproportionately affected and continue to receive less than proper attention, experience broadened disparities, and have less than optimal care. Potential reasons include low health literacy, inadequate communication, reduced inclusivity, and less access to resources. There may also be cultural differences as well as a potential for bias towards these populations. Pharmacists must be mindful of conducting interventions with cultural awareness as individualized attention can provide people living with HIV with better communication and understanding, and therefore improve overall care. Pharmacists remain a central component of the HIV care continuum as they are often the bridge between an individual and their treatment. It is imperative that pharmacists establish rapport with those they work with to facilitate optimal care. This activity will supply pharmacists with the opportunity to explore methods for minimizing racial bias, providing gender-affirming care, and ensuring culturally competent communication when caring for people living with HIV.
