This activity was originally presented at the 2024 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition.
Program Description
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the thickening of the heart muscle, causing the walls of the left ventricle to stiffen, making it unable to relax and fill with blood. Obstructive HCM (oHCM) is the most common type of HCM and can be typically treated with beta blockers or non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers; however, recent advancements in targeted medications can be a turning point for the treatment of HCM. While current guideline-recommended treatments provide symptom relief, newly approved and emerging therapies directly target the underlying pathology of hypercontractility occurring in HCM. Pharmacists need education on these novel and emerging therapies to become more familiar with their unique monitoring and REMS requirements to optimize care and outcomes for patients with HCM. This activity will review the latest HCM practice guidelines and recent clinical evidence supporting recently approved target therapies and novel therapies in the pipeline. With a greater understanding of available and emerging treatments for HCM, pharmacists will be better equipped to decrease the burden of HCM on patients’ quality of life and prevent further cardiac complications.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate the etiology, pathophysiology, and symptoms of obstructive and nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
- Analyze the impact of both HCM subtypes on patients' quality of life
- Identify the limitations and potential adverse effects of current standard therapies for HCM
- Explore emerging clinical data on the efficacy and safety of cardiac myosin inhibitors in managing HCM, including mechanisms of action and potential benefits
- Determine strategies for pharmacists to improve clinical outcomes in HCM management, including formulating evidence-based medication recommendations, providing comprehensive patient education, and collaborating with the health care team
