Managing Schizophrenia: Evidence-Based Care and Optimizing Value of New and Emerging Therapies

Program Description

Schizophrenia is a complex and chronic psychiatric disorder distinguished by disturbances in thought, cognition, and behavior. Disparities persist, and low response rates to the current treatments are poor, with research showing only half of patients being able to live a normal life. Several medications are available to treat schizophrenia, including novel and emerging therapies and technologies that may improve patient adherence, functioning, and management, and reduce the economic impact associated with nonadherence and relapse. Managed care professionals need to be prepared to integrate new technologies, spanning both novel medications and emerging devices, into the treatment landscape to address unmet needs for patients. This activity will discuss symptoms, targets and burden of schizophrenia, analyze the latest clinical research and development of devices and applications, and explore strategies to include new classes of medication into current treatment regimens. With a better understanding of the latest data supporting use of both novel therapies and devices, managed care pharmacists will be better equipped to discuss the best practices for schizophrenia treatment.
