Program Description
Nearly 1 million individuals are living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States. Research has shown that a wide variety of conditions have been mistaken for MS and generally result from misinterpretation of nonspecific symptoms, neurological signs, or MRI findings in common disorders. Because MS is an incurable disease, pharmacists and clinicians must recognize clinical presentation and symptoms early to initiate therapy, such as oral disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), that can help manage exacerbations, reduce relapse rates, and slow disability progression in patients with MS. DMTs and other treatment options have changed the treatment landscape of MS significantly over the past few years, and specialty pharmacists need to stay up-to-date on the latest efficacy and safety data of novel oral treatments for MS to optimize drug therapy. Specialty pharmacists also have important roles in facilitating patient access to these medications as well as selecting a patient-centered treatment regimen and promoting adherence. Informed clinical decision making and implementation of improved therapeutic approaches within the health system to manage patients with MS will ultimately improve their health-related quality of life.
