Program Description

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition in which the immune system destroys platelets. ITP has an incidence of 2 to 5 per 100,000 and can be an isolated primary condition, or it may be secondary to other conditions. Thrombocytopenia is a common problem in patients with cancer. Although chemotherapy and radiation are the major causes of thrombocytopenia in patients with cancer, other etiologies should be considered in all patients. Thrombocytopenia creates numerous problems in the care of a patient with cancer. Pharmacists must be familiar with the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic strategies, and current treatment options for chronic ITP, to best identify and utilize practical approaches when managing patients with chronic ITP who are receiving cancer treatment.
