Management of Immune Thrombocytopenia: Examining New Therapies and Advancements in Treatments, featuring a Patient Perspective

Program Description
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a primary or secondary autoimmune bleeding disorder that leads to issues with clotting due to reduced platelets and megakaryocytes. Chronic ITP affects 5.6 to 20 per 100,000 persons, with risk increasing with age. Patients with ITP also face worsened health-related quality of life due to the burden of treatment. Though corticosteroids are the first-line therapy for patients recently diagnosed with ITP, they have many adverse effects (AEs) that lead to limitations of their use, and alternate therapies are often needed. Current and emerging ITP therapies are aimed at increasing platelet counts and reducing bleeding while limiting these AEs. Pharmacists have an increased responsibility for educating patients on dosage, administration, storage, and AEs of different medications. Proper education and routine follow-up can improve patient adherence and outcomes. This activity includes a patient perspective interview that will provide pharmacists with further insight into the diagnosis, treatment experience, and challenges of a patient with ITP.

• Examine treatment guidelines and goals of treatment for ITP
• Analyze current treatment challenges of ITP and the role of newer therapies
• Identify the role of pharmacists in managing treatments and providing recommendations for patients with ITP
