Program Description
While just 3 chimeric antigen receptor-modified T cell (CAR T-cell) therapies for hematologic malignancies are commercially available, recent years have seen rapid and increased research into these therapies for multiple indications. The production and administration of CAR T-cell therapy can be complex as each product is patient-specific and can require weeks to manufacture with multidisciplinary coordination. Pharmacists must be familiar with guideline recommendations for treatment of CAR-related adverse effects, such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS), and be proactive in ensuring protocols and resources are established for their management. Each of these factors contributes to the high cost of CAR T-cell therapy, which can average up to $1.5 million per patient, though cost-effectiveness analyses suggest these therapies may have a cost-benefit over traditional chemotherapy. Equipped with clinical information regarding safety and efficacy of CAR T-cell therapies, managed care pharmacists can promote their integration of these therapeutics into management strategies that may reduce associated costs, decrease hospitalization, and improve outcomes for patients.
