Program Description
The role of a pharmacist extends well beyond the community pharmacy counter into health systems, health plans, pharmacy benefit management, and/or the government. In these settings, pharmacists can assist in the development and implementation of medication use strategies to improve accessibility of medications while containing associated costs. In this panel discussion, managed care pharmacists will share their expertise and detail various opportunities for pharmacists seeking to improve patient outcomes through managed care teams. Central concepts in managed care, such as formulary development, benefit design, and medication management, will be explained. Panelists will also share insights about their roles in managed care pharmacy, as well as the relationships among pharmacists, specialty pharmacies, insurers, and patients in navigating the health care system.
