Program Description

Though use of targeted oral BTK and BCL-2 inhibitors has improved quality of life for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), challenges remain, namely indefinite length of treatment, that has led to adverse effects and resistance that increase discontinuation rates. This activity will explore evidence for double- and triple-therapy combinations to achieve fixed-duration treatment for patients with CLL receiving BTK and BCL-2 inhibitors. Pharmacists must be involved in approaches that provide efficient, deeper responses, especially in high-risk patients, while minimizing resistance and toxicities. Guideline-recommended strategies for pharmacists to intervene in the management of adverse effects of treatment for patients on BTK inhibitors will be reviewed. One of the biggest challenges in the CLL treatment landscape is financial toxicity, and managed care pharmacists must be familiar with evidence to evaluate fixed-duration treatment regimens utilizing combination strategies with the potential to reduce resources for patients and the healthcare system.
