Program Description
Biologic oncology drugs are the current standard treatment for many forms of cancer; however, they are much more expensive to develop and manufacture than traditional oncology drugs. This high cost imposes a substantial burden on the United States health care system and creates patient access barriers. Biosimilars have been developed as alternatives, potentially lowering costs and increasing access to state-of-the-art care. This comes at a critical time when treatment costs and the incidence of cancer is rising. Thus, the impact of affordable options on the national health care economics may be profound. Managed care pharmacists must ensure they are up-to-date on these cost-effective treatment options to enhance the well-being of patients and decrease their financial burden. This activity will educate managed care professionals about the economic impact of oncology biosimilars, review the necessary considerations for implementation of oncology biosimilars into formularies and clinical pathways, and discuss managed care strategies for encouraging the adoption of oncology biosimilars into clinical practice.
