Program Description

Multiple different subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) exist, with metastatic RCC (mRCC) comprising 75% to 85% of cases. In patients with advanced disease, overall survival remains low despite the approval of several targeted oral agents and immunotherapies. These novel agents have also become a leading driver of cost in the treatment and management of mRCC. Managed care professionals and pharmacists must navigate the emergence of immunotherapies and the financial challenges that arise when used in combination with oral agents. Patient-specific factors that influence clinical decision making must be carefully considered. This article introduces management tools for pharmacologic therapy in mRCC as well as real-world evidence supporting the use of value-based frameworks to guide formulary management and resource utilization. Safety and efficacy data for guideline-recommended and emerging oral targeted therapy combination approaches are also presented.
