Program Description

Treatment strategies for patients with prostate cancer focus on lowering circulating androgen levels. Anti-androgens were initially approved for metastatic, castration-resistant disease but are now being introduced earlier in the disease course. As the landscape of therapies for prostate cancer continues to expand, oncology pharmacists will need to be familiar with evolving guideline recommendations for therapy in patients with castration-naïve and castration-resistant disease. This activity will review clinical trial data supporting use of anti-androgen therapies earlier in the disease course in patients with hormone-sensitive (castration-naïve) disease as well as emerging therapies including combination strategies with PARP inhibitors. Patient counseling video vignettes accompanying this program will review the importance of adherence, management of adverse effects, and details of administration of anti-androgen therapies oncology pharmacists should emphasize when counseling individuals with prostate cancer.
