Program Description
Demodex blepharitis is a common inflammatory ocular condition caused by mite overgrowth affecting the eyelids, eyelashes, lash follicles, and sebaceous glands. Despite its high prevalence, there is a lack of routine screening, standardized diagnostic criteria, and disease awareness among health care providers, including pharmacists. Misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis occur frequently and are concerning, as untreated cases can lead to ocular discomfort, complications, and adverse effects. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play a crucial role in recognizing and clinically managing Demodex blepharitis, acting as patient identifiers, advocates, and educators. This program will review the pathophysiology of Demodex blepharitis This program will also explore treatment and adherence recommendations and education strategies to improve patient outcomes. Participants will explore traditional therapies and gain insights into the first FDA-approved treatment, including its efficacy, safety, and practical applications.
