Program Description

Demodex blepharitis is a common inflammatory ocular condition caused by mite overgrowth affecting the eyelids, eyelashes, lash follicles, and sebaceous glands. Despite its high prevalence, there is a lack of routine screening, standardized diagnostic criteria, and disease awareness among health care providers, including pharmacists. Misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis occur frequently and are concerning, as untreated cases can lead to ocular discomfort, complications, and adverse effects. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play a crucial role in recognizing and clinically managing Demodex blepharitis, acting as patient identifiers, advocates, and educators. This program will review the pathophysiology of Demodex blepharitis. This program will also explore treatment and adherence recommendations and education strategies to improve patient outcomes. Participants will explore traditional therapies and gain insights into the first FDA-approved treatment, including its efficacy, safety, and practical applications.

Educational Objectives for Pharmacists

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify the clinical signs and symptoms of Demodex blepharitis and the impact on patient quality of life
• Explain the role of newly approved targeted therapy in addressing the limitations of treatment options for Demodex blepharitis, including short-term efficacy and potential adverse effects
• Provide patient counseling on the proper administration and dosage of Demodex blepharitis medications, including eyelid hygiene techniques

Educational Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the signs and symptoms of Demodex blepharitis and the challenges it poses to patient quality of life
• Recall treatment options—including newly approved targeted therapies—and consider safety and efficacy
• Outline the administration techniques and storage requirements of Demodex blepharitis medications
