Program Description
Atopic dermatitis (AD) often presents in childhood but can be a chronic condition that persists through adolescence and into adulthood. AD is characterized by bouts of recurrent inflammation and skin damage resulting in itching and dryness that negatively impacts patients’ quality of life. While there is currently no cure for AD, conventional management focuses on the combined use of nonpharmacologic factors such as avoiding irritants and systemic treatments of topical therapies with corticosteroids to address AD flares. Several Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors have recently been approved, and other emerging agents and medication classes are under investigation for the management of AD. As the JAK inhibitors enter the treatment paradigm for AD, pharmacists will have an important role in counseling patients about JAK inhibitors, including administration and potential adverse effects. This activity will highlight clinical safety and efficacy data supporting the use of JAK inhibitors as well as counseling points for patients to self-manage symptoms of AD. The pharmacist’s involvement in creating individualized treatment regimens supporting appropriate use of emerging JAK inhibitors will be discussed.
