This activity was originally presented at the 2022 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exposition.
Program Description
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) occurs when iron deficiency is severe enough to diminish erythropoiesis and cause the development of anemia. IDA, a microcytic anemia is the most common cause of anemia worldwide, and its management includes identification and treatment of the underlying cause, if feasible, and iron supplementation. Though many patients with IDA can be treated with oral iron replacement agents, some cases warrant the use of intravenous (IV) iron, especially in adults who cannot tolerate or absorb oral iron. Pharmacists within health systems and hospitals must recognize risk factors and clinical presentation of IDA. This activity will review the challenges associated with identifying and treating IDA, especially in patient populations at greater risk for health complications. With a greater understanding of available and emerging oral and IV iron formulations, pharmacists will be better equipped to discuss the benefits and risks of each, including efficacy and safety, with patient populations that are ideal candidates for IV iron replacement therapies.
