Program Description
Treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC) is complex, with patients often experiencing adverse effects to therapy and difficult dosing regimens that contribute to nonadherence, thus affecting treatment outcomes. A newer class of agents with recent FDA approval for the treatment of UC is the sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) modulators. With the addition of a new agent and emerging class increasing the number of pharmacologic agents for treatment and management of UC, pharmacists need to be aware of individual treatment considerations, especially efficacy and safety data and administration. Expert panelists will discuss the nuances of oral therapy associated with use of S1P modulators and factors that guide treatment selection for patients and that may improve adherence. This activity features patient case discussions exploring different potential treatment options and considerations in the management of patients with UC. A patient perspective interview documenting the journey from diagnosis through treatment selection and the pharmacist’s role throughout will also be shared.
