Integrating Guideline-Driven Protocols Into Evidence-Based Practice to Improve Outcomes in Patients With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Program Description
In recent years, significant progress in the detection and management of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has led to important new evidence-based recommendations for treatment. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate initiation of PAH therapy are essential in helping patients achieve low-risk status and improve long-term prognosis. This program will review the most recent updates integrated in 2022 guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of PAH, including classification systems, recommendations for initial drug therapies, and emerging evidence for combination therapies. Managed care pharmacists must be familiar with emerging treatment approaches to ensure that patients with PAH receive timely and cost-effective treatment to prevent complications and reduce disease burden to enhance patient quality of life. As members of the multidisciplinary care team, managed care pharmacists must balance therapeutic efficacy, outcomes, and costs to provide guidance regarding optimum sequencing of treatments to reduce the clinical and economic burden of PAH for patients.

• Explain the underlying causes, symptoms, and impact on quality of life associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)
• Analyze the safety and effectiveness of new and emerging treatments and interventions for PAH management through examination of current research and data
• Apply knowledge of the cost of PAH and its effect on health-related quality of life to the care of patients with PAH, including dosing optimization strategies and addressing barriers to optimize the appropriate treatment
