Program Description
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is considered more aggressive and has a poorer prognosis than other subtypes of breast cancer. The heterogenicity of TNBC and lack of specific molecular targets make it challenging to treat. While TNBC is responsive to cytotoxic chemotherapy, duration of response is short, and relapses are common. Chemotherapy is the foundation of treatment for TNBC, but immune checkpoint inhibitors given in combination with chemotherapy as well as oral PARP inhibitors have expanded treatment options for TNBC based on tumor biomarkers and mutations. The rapidly growing treatment armamentarium in TNBC requires a proactive shift in the roles and responsibilities for all members of the oncology care team. Individuals involved in the care of patients with TNBC must collaborate and share best practices for management and coordination of care in order to optimize patient outcomes.
