Program Description
Presbyopia is an ocular condition that affects visual acuity with gradual onset of blurred vision and inability to see clear details. It is common among individuals older than 40 years, and it can be induced by certain comorbidities, such as diabetes, or use of medications. Current treatment options for presbyopia correction include reading glasses, contact lenses, and a series of surgical techniques. Pharmacists play an active role in providing advice and treatment recommendations for presbyopia and overall eye health. Pharmacologic strategies to correct presbyopia include treatments that address the underlying cause of the condition and alter the composition of the lens and treatments that address symptoms of presbyopia. This activity will review recently approved and emerging pharmaco-refractive agents, with particular focus on their mechanism of action and dynamic pupil modulation. Strategies for pharmacists to identify patients who are at risk for presbyopia and provide education about available treatment options will be discussed.
